Michele Bachmann's Response to State of the Union

As prepared for delivery: Good evening, my name is Congresswoman Michele Bachmann from Minnesota’s 6th District.

Two years ago, when Barack Obama became our President, unemployment was 7.8 percent and our national debt stood at what seemed like a staggering $10.6 trillion dollars.

We wondered whether the President would cut spending, reduce the deficit and implement real job-creating policies.

Unfortunately, the President’s strategy for recovery was to spend a trillion dollars on a failed stimulus program, fueled by borrowed money.

The White House promised us that all the spending would keep unemployment under 8 percent.

Not only did that plan fail to deliver, but within three months the national jobless rate spiked to 9.4 percent. And sadly, it hasn’t been lower for 20 straight months. While the government grew, we lost more than 2 million jobs.

New Tea Party Caucus launches in Senate — with three members

New Tea Party Caucus launches in Senate — with three members
...Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul on Friday announced the formation of a new Senate Tea Party Caucus, taking a formal step toward uniting members of the movement in the 112th Congress.

Paul and Sens. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) will be the group’s inaugural members, according to a joint statement released by Paul’s office.

“Republicans in the Senate have already made a pledge to end earmarks and fight for a balanced-budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution,” Paul said in the statement. “By joining with my fellow Senators, Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Mike Lee of Utah, as well as grassroots groups who see the need for government reform, the caucus will work to enact real change to protect our country and its taxpayers from an ever-expanding government.”…

The caucus is slated to hold its first meeting at 10 a.m. on Jan. 27, two days after the Senate reconvenes following a two-and-a-half-week break....

Doctor: Giffords passes 'major milestone' msnbc
TUCSON, Ariz. — U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has passed a "major milestone" on her recovery from a gunshot wound to the head, doctors said Thursday.

The Arizona congresswoman has been sitting up, dangling her legs on the edge of the hospital bed and moving her limbs in response to commands. That's after she spontaneously opened her eyes during visits with her colleagues Wednesday night. She is able to lift both of her legs on command and is yawning and starting to rub her eyes, doctors said.

"She's becoming more aware of her surroundings," trauma chief Dr. Peter Rhee said during a news conference at the University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., Thursday....

TRANSCRIPT: Obama Speech Addresses Tragedy in Tucson

To the families of those we've lost; to all who called them friends; to the students of this university, the public servants gathered tonight, and the people of Tucson and Arizona: I have come here tonight as an American who, like all Americans, kneels to pray with you today, and will stand by you tomorrow.

There is nothing I can say that will fill the sudden hole torn in your hearts. But know this: the hopes of a nation are here tonight. We mourn with you for the fallen. We join you in your grief. And we add our faith to yours that Representative Gabrielle Giffords and the other living victims of this tragedy pull through.

GOP-Controlled House Kicks Off New Session by Reading Constitution Aloud
Though it has been inserted as text into the Congressional Record before, the supreme law of the land has never been read aloud before in the body known as "the People's House."
The man responsible for the exercise, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., says it's more than just a simple civics lesson.
"This is a very symbolic showing to the American people," said Goodlatte, "and it's a powerful message to members of Congress. We are a nation of laws, not of men."

Karen Brooks: Patriots and Prejudice

The call rang out February 19, 2009, when Rick Santelli, a Chicago stock commentator, voiced his now famous rant over the bail out of delinquent mortgages. His “call” was for other outraged Americans to push back, against the moral and economic tyranny of big government, with the modern day equivalent of a Boston Tea Party.

Today our government rewards bad behavior at the expense of those who play by the rules, pay their taxes and live responsible lives. For decades a collective “we” allowed this assault to our civil liberties and family values, the growth of all levels of government and faceless regulation, and the theft of our property through monumental debt.

Overnight an electronic firestorm turned frustration into action as websites sprang up, emails swept the nation and self-proclaimed patriots began networking. The common denominator to this grassroots movement is liberty from government?s unconstitutional control over our lives. These patriots esteem the Constitution, demand smaller government, understand the importance of free markets, and expect fiscal responsibility. These values strike at the core of how they live their lives.

This is a memo to America’s hippies: Tea Party values are hippie values.

You heard me right. The Tea Party is the one social movement in contemporary America that can rightfully claim to be the ideological heir to the original hippie movement that started in the mid-’60s. And because of this, all current hippies and ex-hippies should support the Tea Party, and by extension Tea Party candidates....

Tea Party 2010: A year of review in photos
President Obama, the progressive Democrats, and the mainstream media underestimated the American people. They underestimated the Forgotten American. They underestimated the Tea Party Movement. And in 2010, the collective passion, angst, anger, frustration, sadness, depression, outrage, fear, resentment, intelligence, wisdom, and hope of a real people's revolution was expressed in the way our Founding Fathers intended: at the ballot box.

All across America, the White House finally felt the power of the people. Harnessing that power, the Tea Party Movement laid waste to the liberal hopes of Democrats, old and new, on November 2, 2010. Now, in 2011, the House of Representatives will have a new face, a new heart, and a new focus: to reign in Big Government abuses and return America back to something that Thomas Jefferson and George Washington would have recognized. Let us hope that in 2011, this new Congress does not let us down.
