How the relationship between the Tea Party movement and establishment Republicans will develop is going to be one of the most closely watched storylines of the next year.

Getting Below the Surface
We of course know that the November 2, 2010, elections were historical on many different levels. The Republican gains of 63 seats in the House and 6 in the Senate dwarf the Republican Revolution of 1994 and double the historical average gains in the Senate for a party out of power. These gains were made despite a cash-strapped Republican National Committee (RNC), strategic decisions by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) to spend $8 million in the long-shot California Senate race instead of Washington and Colorado, and the fact that the RNC, NRSC, and National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) had a zero ground game.
But what the November midterm elections did do was confirm and destroy some of the most talked-about conventional wisdom about the so-called Tea Party movement, as well as raise some warning flags for Republicans moving into the 2012 election cycle.

Tea Party activists revealed themselves to be, if not completely organized, at the very least politically pragmatic, engaged, and ready to press their agenda on the local, state, and federal level well after Election Day.

Coastal turmoil: Cities won't nominate (Mark) Lovelace for coastal commissioner seat
...The Board of Supervisors nominated (Mark) Lovelace, Fortuna Mayor Pro Tem Ken Zanzi and Mendocino County Supervisor Kendall Smith. The public resources code regarding nominations seems clear that boards of supervisors and city selection committees each nominate at least one supervisor and one city councilmember.

(The mayors of the seven cities in Humboldt County chose to nominate four city councilmen -- including two mayors on the panel) The committee on Thursday nominated Zanzi, Fortuna Councilman Dean Glaser, as well as Ferndale Mayor Jeff Farley and Eureka Mayor Frank Jager, who both sit on the committee....

The seat coming vacant is for the North Coast and is held by outgoing Supervisor Bonnie Neely.

Runner-Up for TIME Person of The Year

The Tea Party TIME Magazine
...Despite the age-old currents, though, Tea Partyism is in certain respects a purely contemporary wave. It spread like wildfire, upending dozens of elections, yet has not coalesced around a single leader, a single agenda or even a common name. The Institute for Research & Education on Human Rights has produced a detailed history of Tea Party organizations from large to tiny, viewable at teapartynationalism.com. Included is a map covered with a blizzard of dots, each representing a group or chapter or website or even just a couple of people. This dizzying multitude is arrayed around at least six different banners: Tea Party Nation, Tea Party Express, Tea Party Patriots, FreedomWorks, ResistNet, the 1776 Tea Party. Leveraging the same tools that helped elect President Obama — Facebook, Meetup, blogs, YouTube — the Tea Party opposition to Obama's policies grew huge without ever growing organized

In a sense, identifying with the Tea Party movement was like catching Beatlemania in the 1960s....

Process to Close Sportfishing in California Nearing Critical Final Vote

Time to be writing letters folks-Deadline December 15th--send to
Jim Kellogg
California Fish and Game Commission
P.O. Box 944209
Sacramento, CA 94244-2090

During its upcoming meeting, the California Fish and Game Commission could vote to enclose approximately 15 percent of southern California’s coastal waters within marine protected areas (MPAs), including many of the most popular fishing spots, under the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) process. This critical vote comes at a time when concerns about the MLPA process continue to escalate. A recent court ruling validates long-held concerns about the secretive ways in which the groups implementing the MLPA have been making decisions. The meeting is being held December 15-16, in Santa Barbara.

The MLPA process has been plagued by numerous issues which have not been resolved, including:

• The lack of a transparent and open decision making process
• Inadequate resources for enforcement and biological monitoring
• A process that side-steps a science-based fisheries management approach that clearly identifies the threats to California’s marine environment

Touted as “ecosystem protection,” the MLPA only targets recreational fishing and its significant economic contributions to California’s economy all the while ignoring the litany of significant threats to California’s oceans, such as sewage outfalls and storm water runoff, agricultural chemicals and other pollutants, ocean acidification, ocean side development and once-through cooling.

The Department of Fish and Game estimates that the MPA regulations will cost California’s taxpayers $40 million annually for enforcement and biological monitoring – resources that the state simply does not have. With a current deficit of $26 billion, California cannot afford to adopt costly measures that will only work to limit recreational fishing access which provides employment for 20,000 Californians.

Richard Mack, former sheriff of Graham County, Arizona, and long-time crusader for freedom and individual rights. Right now, it is vital that we restore the Constitution as the supreme law of the land. The greatest threat we face today is not terrorists; it is our own federal government. If America is conquered or ruined it will be from within, not a foreign enemy.

In 1994 he filed a lawsuit challenging the Brady bill to stop the federal government from forcing another unfunded mandate down our throats. He won a decision at the US Supreme Court on the issue of States' rights. This suit catapulted he to national attention, with television appearances on the Donahue Show, Good Morning America, Crossfire, Nightline, CNBC, and SHOWTIME'S the AMERICAN CANDIDATE. he has been on over 500 radio talk shows nationwide, ranging from G. Gordon Liddy and Charles Goyette to Derry Brownfield and Pat Buchannan. He has traveled the country extensively and has seen first hand the horrible side effects from politicians who have replaced our Constitution with their own political agendas and party platforms.
